Friday, October 16, 2009 Palmer’s thumb injury (non-throwing hand) doesn’t appear to be a big deal and he is expected to play Sunday. |

Wednesday, September 02, 2009 Palmer practiced with the starters Tuesday, the first time he had done that since injuring his ankle. |

Monday, August 24, 2009 Palmer is questionable for the Bengals' preseason game Thursday against St. Louis after sitting out last week's game. He did not practice with the team Sunday, though he did some light throwing. Coach Marvin Lewis indicated, however, that his ankle sprain is not expected to be a long-term injury. "If last week had been a regular-season game, he probably would have played," Lewis said. |

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 Palmer missed practice Monday with an ankle injury, and his availability for the Bengals' preseason game Thursday at New England is in question. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis described the injury as a mild to moderate high-ankle sprain. Palmer hurt the ankle in the team's preseason opener Friday. |

Saturday, August 15, 2009 Palmer missed most of last season with an elbow injury, but it was his ankle that was hurting (mildly) after the Bengals' preseason opener. His elbow felt fine. "I feel good," he said. "A little rusty. ... We've got to keep working and get the rust off." Palmer completed 7-of-11 passes for 133 yards and one interception. |
Scouting Report from the Magazine |
Several factors affect how we assess Palmer for 2009. First is the elbow injury that limited him to four games last season. He opted to rest it over having surgery and only time will tell if he made the right choice. We think the free agent loss of WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh is huge. You don’t easily replace a guy who regularly produced 90-plus catches and scored 25 times in the last three seasons. We don’t view offseason addition Laveranues Coles as a direct replacement. Cincinnati’s offensive line must do a better job of protection, too. Only two teams allowed more sacks than the Bengals did last season (51), and no quarterback will post good numbers behind a bad line. Playing in the same division as Pittsburgh and Baltimore is no picnic, either. Palmer has thrown more than one TD pass in only three of his last nine games against those teams, so that’s four games in which you have to question him. Palmer might be the classic high-risk, high-reward guy this year, but we think the risk is greater.
Grogans' Take:We expect Palmer to last fairly long on draft day, but if you decide to take him, don’t wait long to get a quality backup.
